Bedrock Geology

of a section of Weeks State Park

AmFault.jpg

The most dramatic feature of the bedrock at Weeks State  Park is the Ammonoosuc Fault.

The fault is about 100 meters (328 feet) wide and cuts through the center of park. It extends from the Massachusetts border up the Connecticut River Valley and ends just northeast of the park.

Although the Ammonoosuc Fault may well be the most dramatic feature, there are many other fascinating aspects of the geology found in this unique park.

If you would like to read more, you can purchase a copy of the 2019 geology study (brochure) on sale in the summit lodge gift shop. It is very well  illustrated with photos of the rock samples taken at various locations on Mt. Prospect. The photos and the locations of the various rock outcroppings are shown in the brochure.

It is a great companion guide to have along as you examine the rocks and the topography on Mt. Prospect.
