An Old-fashioned Winter!

Yesterday, February 15, 2026, was a perfect day to take a hike up to the top of Mt. Prospect and enjoy winter scenes that we seemingly have not encountered for a few years. Not only is the snow very deep, but the swirling, sculpture-like trim here on the railings at the North Overlook as well as those on the trees is stunning.

The view down to Lancaster and to the North Country beyond was lovely on this bluebird, winter's day.

The picnic tables at the tennis court are serving up a full helping of winter dessert.

Meanwhile, over on the east side of John Weeks' summer residence, the stonework and trim always impresses. Rob Bast, an architect, and our Weeks family representative on the WSPA board, explained to us one time how the framing of the building was specifically designed to allow for a "bifurcated" chimney that goes around either side of the lower window.

Speaking of stonework, our repointed masonry, completed in the Fall of 2024, helps beautifully accent the stones in the full sun.

As you can see in this picture, there is still a construction barrier around the house. You may remember that last year the more than $3,000,000 renovation project necessitated the closure of the building. WSPA's renowned summer programs were held away from Weeks State Park. This year, we cannot wait for the re-opening of our treasured house museum and the launch of our summer programs in the second-floor great room. We'll have more to say about this in our next newsletter - In Prospect.

Despite the frigid temperature, it's not without a little regret when the time comes to leave the summit. A last look back to the summit as we descend the trail.

And another look up the trail from the hairpin turn.

Here's a view of Mt. Cabot and the Kilkenny's and a nicely snow-accented oak tree.

The view from the East Overlook towards Jefferson and the Presidentials.

At the West Overlook, it was interesting to contrast the fall scene depicted on our recently added WSPA- sponsored sign as we are immersed in the midst of the winter season. The signs that have been added in the park, by the way, are holding up beautifully.

It's time now to leave the trail to others. There were indeed a lot of hikers out yesterday. The auto road is usually packed down very firmly because of the many hikers, cross-country skiers and occasional snowmobiles. It's truly wonderful to be able to walk under a firm footing in the winter - especially in this old-fashioned winter. If you venture off the path, though, be prepared to plunge into waist deep snow. Seriously.
We hope that you enjoyed this virtual winter excursion on Mt. Prospect - from the top down. We realize that not everyone is able to adventure out in the cold and the snow. In fact, some of our members may currently be in warmer regions! That's fine. We're more than happy to share these winter scenes and will be delighted to welcome you back to the park when you're able to return.
